I have a table with old paintings and want a plaque or something to add, to explain the meaning.

Well, I think, because you put up a tribute to those who have died. Why not something simple ...
No names, if they were married
Then type something like "Married for __ year and every day a new adventure ..."
Or something cute like that.
Do your grandparents have a wedding song? Maybe you could use the letter on your wedding song with his picture ...

This is a nice gesture! I will simply supply the name, date of marriage and a nice (short).

It is a very attractive idea. I would look for me a lot of money, antique pictures and it on the table where the cake. :)
